tips on Symantec Security Response Newsletter,
Setting up the Google Toolbar, Free program
converters from Microsoft, Keyboard shortcuts,
internet/email solutions, removing HOTBAR and tips
on buying a laptop computer.

<Get the Symantec Security Response Newsletter>

With all the hubbub about the latest threat to computers with
the Windows 2000 and the XP operating systems, it would seem
to be a great idea to sign up for a newsletter that alerts you to
the latest virus problems.  Symantec has that newsletter! Click on
this link to subscribe to their free newsletter to get your updates
on the latest viruses and worms, delivered directly to your email box:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/newsletter_regions/en.html

Be sure and follow the directions when the confirmation email comes to you.  Copy/paste the webpage address in the email into your browser address bar (Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla) to finish the subscription
process.

<Great Hoax Virus WebPage>

Check out this page of the most common viruses
and hoaxes going around these days.  It's very informative.

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/virus.htm

Snopes.com is also a great place to check out emails
that sound too good to be true, and it really helps
you not to send false email accounts.  Although a few
still get by me. :)

<Setting up the Google Toolbar, free>

This is a great Search Toolbar that can be installed in your browser and your will have a search engine at your fingertips every time you open your Internet Explorer:

Go to http://toolbar.google.com

Scroll down to "Get the Google Toolbar".
Click on it.

Next, Click on "I agree to terms of use, install Google Toolbar" (read the terms of use). Click "I accept".

I'm for privacy so...next step:

Click on "Install without Advanced Features".  It shows "now being downloaded and installed", and a box pops up Asking of you want to install the toolbar, click yes.  You're almost done...

Installing Google toolbar, downloading toolbar, and
Congratulations!  You've done it.

I personally like this toolbar because I have a search engine just waiting for me at all times.  You can put the toolbar away, however, by clicking on View at the top of the Internet Explorer
browser program, toolbars, and uncheck the Google toolbar.
You might have to click on "unlock toolbars" to get this done.
Anyway, then you are in control when you don't want the toolbar
cluttering up your browser window.

<Free Works Converters to Word Format>

In the past, if you didn't have a Works program on your computer, you could not view a Works Documents.  Here's some great news, there are free downloads of viewers and converters available, and here's one download site for these:

http://bizgrok.com/help/msproducts/  (Works converter)

http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp

Everyone ought to have these viewers on their computers if you
don't have the programs.  Then, when you receive a Works,
Word, PowerPoint or Excel document, you'll be able to view it.

<Help, my Internet Explorer screen is stuck in Full Screen mode>

Ever have this happen, you click on F11 to view the full screen
and the next time to open the Internet Explorer, it's on full screen
again.  Here's the solution:

Open up the Internet Explorer, as usual, click on F11,
and click  (View) on the menu bar (file, edit, view...), and
in the dropdown menu, click on the checkmark next to
Full Screen, and that will deselect it, and your problems
should be over.

Thanks goes to David Millar for posing this problem!

<Saving an attachment to the hard drive>

To save a file attachment to the hard drive:
Open e-mail
Double-Click on File attachment
Click on Save as or Save it to disk
Choose location in which to save attachment in the "save in" field.
(Example:  My Documents).
Name file in "File Name" field.
Click Save.

To open an attachment, just click OPEN IT after you double click.

<Keyboard Shortcuts>

I've had some requests for Keyboard shortcuts lately, and
the old DOS days memories came back :).  Glad we're not
there again, but these shortcuts can come in handy.  You will
probably need to copy/paste these long hyperlinks into your
browser address bar,

Keyboard shortcuts for Windows 95,98, 98SE, and ME:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;126449

Keyboard shortcuts for Windows 2000:

http://www.labmice.net/articles/keyboard.htm

Keyboard shortcuts for Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301583

<When your hyperlinks won't respond>

If Outlook Express or Internet Explorer won't respond when
you click on a hyperlink, here's the solution:

Go to Windows Explorer (right-click on the start button, click explore in
the
menu) then click on Tools/Folder Options/File Types.  Highlight
URL:HyperTextTransfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit. Under Application used to perform action it should read:  "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

<Here's another way to get your hyperlinks to work again>

1.) Open Internet Explorer
2.) Click the Tools menu
3.) Click Internet Options from the Tools menu
4.) Select the Advanced Tab
5.) Scroll down to find the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" in the Browsing category
6.) check the box
7.) Click apply, and Ok.

<Newest Annoyance: HotBar>

Removing the annoying HotBar:

I just removed the HotBar from my mother's computer today.  You remove it from add/remove programs.  It's under "web tools for HotBar" or something like that.  (explain procedure)

<Tips on buying a Laptop (Notebook) computer>

Recently someone asked me to give some tips on buying a Laptop and I thought maybe more of you were wondering, so here are a
few ideas for you.  Toshiba and IBM ThinkPad are among the highest rated Notebook Computers these days.  Get a mid expensive one, and buy the extended warranty.  All companies are using the same parts to build their computers, quality control is the issue with laptops and desktops.  The other issue is that laptops malfunction a little more often than desktops, and they are more expensive to fix, so cover yourself with the 3 year extended warranty.  A 64Mb video card or higher would be preferable, cdwriter for sure, and the hard drive should be at least 40 GB. Other than these features, get a 2.0 Gigahertz processor and 256 megabytes of RAM (memory).  That will fix you up for a long time.  If you're going to invest the money, get a good one, otherwise get a GREAT Desktop computer for the same money.

<PayPal Scam Email>

Curiosity caused me to open the message, which included the PayPal logo and this text: "This e-mail is the notification of recent innovation taken by PayPal to detect inactive customers and nonfunctioning mailboxes. The inactive customers are subject to restriction and removal in the next 3 months. Please confirm your email address and (sic) Credit Card info number by logging in to your PayPal account using the form below."

The form included fields for e-mail address and password, name, credit card number, expiration date and ATM PIN (for bank verification).

The message ended with "This notification expires May 31, 2003" and language that thanked me for using PayPal, followed by instructions for removing myself from the e-mail list.

It was all bogus. The only "innovation" was the sender's ability to get the message to a valid e-mail address and his ability to make it look very real.

I hope these tips have been interesting to you all.  I appreciate all of you.  Remember that I will have all these monthly issues of my newsletter available at my websites, along with other information:
