Hello everyone!
Well, Memorial day will soon be upon us, and school will be out in less than 2
days. Oh, yeah! My two boys, Jake and Brian, will be "helping
me to get this newsletter out" :).
*New Virus Warning*
So, hope everyone is doing well, staying busy, and enjoying your computer.
I recently heard from a very nice lady who was very concerned about the
possibility that she had spread a new virus around
to all her friends. The new virus is called: W32.Magistr.24876@mm, also
known as: I-Worm.Magistr, PE_MAGISTR.A, an attachment,
worm-like behavior, which means it gets in your operating system, and your
address book and sends itself out to all your buddies to wreak havoc on as many
people as possible. You can read more about this virus at (you may need to
copy and paste this entire address in your browser if you don't see all these
words as a colored hyperlink):
www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html
Here is the top threats page at the Symantec website, if you're
interested:

Whatever happened to those endearing names like the "love virus" or
"prettypark"? I think the criminal element that is unleashing
these viruses upon society is getting nastier! Keep your anti-virus
software
updated, because there is more and more to protect yourself from these days.
You can refer to my anti-virus updating newsletter to reacquaint yourselves with
the updating, downloading procedure at:
www.rockyreport.com/arm_yourself_against_viruses.htm
I'd also like to say, "you keep your anti-virus software updated, and
that's all you can do". Don't let the bad guys push you around, and
make you miss out on a lot of great email. They have won the battle when
that happens. Many people think that if they don't accept email from
strangers, or don't accept .exe attachments, they are lessening their chances of
getting a virus. This strategy will not save you if the virus is a worm or
Trojan, and it intertwines within your address book, and it sends out to all
your friends, and their friends, and so on. That is the nature of the
"beast", it will come from your friends. One more thing, don't
have a guilty conscience about this, just keep your anti-virus software updated,
and understand that this is email, and it's not a matter of placing blame on
ourselves when some uncaring person sends out a malicious element. We're
all just doing the best we can!
*A Newsflash about Norton's Subscription Renewal*
Recently, I helped my mom with her anti-virus updating and discovered a
marvelous thing. She was getting the message that her anti-virus software
was expired and it was time to renew the subscription. We clicked yes to
view information about the renewal of the subscription for
another years worth of anti-virus definition downloads, and prepared for the big
price. To our surprise and delight, the price for renewing this
subscription was just $3.95 + tax= $4.26. This is the bargain for the
year! Score One more for Symantec, also known as Norton. You can go
through the procedure very painlessly by filling out the information for
your name, address, and so forth on a very secure 128-bit website (this is the
best it can get to insure your privacy for giving a credit card #, and I believe
it even had a place to call to give that information
if you are more comfortable doing so), you will notice a lock on the bottom of
the page. After you go through this procedure, they will send you a
confirmation email and you need to print this out, and save it. It
will contain the receipt for your purchase, and an order # that you
should have in the event that you had to reinstall all the software on your
computer because of some sort of computer failure. You will need that
order # to substantiate your purchase and renewal subscription.
This is sooooo worth it, to keep your computer safe. The purchase price
for the new program is $29.95 up to $49.95, and getting another year's worth of
anti-virus definitions is a real bargain at just $4.26!
I think that this proves that Norton has your best interests at heart.
They are really making it affordable to update and keep you having a wonderful
computer, internet, email experience. By the way, Sam's and Wal-Mart usually have the program for $29.95.
On a reality note, I would like to add, that I have had a couple of problems
updating the anti-virus definitions with the 2001 version of Norton's Anti-virus
software on some computers, but reinstalling
the program seemed to work out the updating problem. It doesn't want to
download and update the virus definitions sometimes, so be sure that you check
this out after you have downloaded the anti-virus
definitions, by opening the program, and looking at the system status screen,
and check the date that your anti-virus definitions are "up to date".
If the program isn't updating properly, it will show a date from
months ago, and you will see a yellow exclamation point by the task; if it is
updating properly, you will see a date close or exactly to the day you have
updated the anti-virus definitions, and there will be a green
checkmark beside it.
I will get back to you, guys and gals, on the task scheduler for Scandisk and
Defrag soon. I wanted to talk to you all about these subjects on Viruses
and Anti-Virus software while it was fresh on my mind. The Task Scheduler
will take a little time, and there's a new story on Diskeeper that I want to
tell, so I'll talk to you again, soon.
Hope you all have the VERY BEST DAY!!
I appreciate all of you. Remember that I will have all these monthly
