Rocky Report Newsletter -- March 2009

Privacy Policy: I will never share your email address with anyone.

Hi everyone,

I feel like I need to introduce myself to you all again. I'm Rocky Hamilton, owner of Internet Guide and More, www.internetguideandmore.com . I have been in business for 10+ years, and I started this newsletter to keep people informed on the newest problems, solutions, programs, you-name-it in the computer world. There are just about 700 people taking this newsletter, and I appreciate you all very much. I hope that we can begin again, and I can give you the benefit of my experience in the day to day of computers and the internet.  I take my leads from the everyday challenges that I meet, so I think that you will find this information timely. I repair computers, training and web design.

I've started teaching a couple classes for a continuing education group at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas called OLLI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. I have a lot of the printed materials available on my website on some computer basics: www.internetguideandmore.com/classwork.html

I hope you can click on these links and go to these pages easily, if not, you will need to highlight the web address and then right click on it and click copy. Go to Internet Explorer, and then click right click in the web address area and click paste. Anyway, these printed documents can be printed and hopefully, they will be of some help to you. Keep in mind, they are very basic and for Windows XP, although you could apply some of the principles to Windows Vista Operating
system.

In May, I will have more information for you on a great free program, Picasa 3. I will be teaching that class for 4 hours, and I'll have many more documents to help with the use of that program with your digital photos. You can download the program free at http://picasa.google.com/.

Okay, here's an email problem that so many are having. There are many errors happening with Yahoo email accounts and around here suddenlink accounts. One that I know of for my email address rockyham@rockyreport.com is that many people with a yahoo email address that use the webmail on www.yahoo.com are not able to reply to my address. If I send you this newsletter and you try to reply to me, you may get an error email message that comes back to you. You may have to create a new email message to send me an email. I have worked with my internet provider and we could not find the problem, but the internet shows many people having a problem withthe yahoo webmail. Just wanted to inform you. I highly recommend the free gmail email program. It really does seem to have the least problems and you can have any internet provider and use gmail. They have less spam, and you can even set Gmail up to work with your Outlook Express Program or Incredimail or Outlook. Any email program that you can set up a pop3 email account will work. You can check this out at: www.gmail.com  and click on "sign up for gmail". Totally free! I also have more information on Gmail on my website: www.internetguideandmore.com/classwork.html
Just scroll through to find the topic gmail.

Many people are upgrading their Microsoft Office program to the 2007 version. It is often cheaper than the older Office 2003 version. There is a problem with this version if you are receiving email attachments with a document saved from the 2007 Word, Excel, or PowerPoint program. You won't be able to open it unless you also have the Office 2007 program, or you have the compatibility Pack from Microsoft. You can download it free at this website address:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

Hope you get this hyperlink to work, if not type in Office 2007 compatibility pack in a search engine like www.google.com  or www.yahoo.com  Click download when you get to the page, click run or save, click desktop, and click save and then open when it's finished downloading. If you click save, you'll always be able to double click the file if you need to from the desktop where you saved it. One more thing on the subject of Office 2007, you can also click on the upper left "office button" and click save as, move your cursor and click on Office 97-2003 document. This will ensure that any office document will be able to be opened whether the person you are sending this to has office 2007 or the converter. Hope this helps someone today!

One more thing, very important, stay away from Internet Explorer 8. This is not a good program, yet, and may never be, and you can remove it in add/remove programs in the control panel (start, control panel, or settings, control panel). IE 8 is causing all kinds of bizarre problems on computers, from printers not working (that also happened with HP printers and IE7) to other programs not functioning and just general windows operating system problems. If you don't know if you have it, click on the Internet Explorer program, click help and about internet Explorer to see the version you have. Now if by some slim chance you are not having problems and you do have IE8, good for you. Just wanted people to know that this is a buggy program.

That's all for now and remember that I will have all these issues of my newsletter available at my websites, along with other information:
