Ok, St. Patrick's Day has come and gone; Spring break is over;
Spring is arriving in the morning; and my son, Jake has just
had his 8th birthday!  It's early in the morning, house is quiet,
everyone else is sleeping.  I'm ready to write! :)

Hello Everyone!

Last time we discussed the saving process for your address
book and your favorites in AOL 5.0.  I went on and on about the
big brother approach for the 6.0 address book.  Since then, I have
fixed a computer with AOL as the Internet provider, and without
the big brother AOL, they would have lost all their addresses, so I
suppose that would be something good about it.  I still have the need for privacy, though.  Just back up, save things, prepare for the worst!

Anyway, all that said, here's the rest of the process to restore or
replace the address book when you need to because of disaster or
better yet, a new computer :)!

1.  Open up the AOL program, and place the floppy disk that has
your saved addresses and favorites in the floppy drive.

2. Click on Mail Center, address book, and Save/replace in the
right hand corner.

3. In the Save/replace menu, look to the bottom, and click in the
circle next to "Replace the Address Book for your current screen
name", and then click, OK.

4.  This brings up the "Select File to Restore" box, in the "Look In"
bar, click in bar and click on 3 1/2 floppy (A:), then click on
Address Book.pfc in the large white box, and that will plant the
file name, and click "Open".  In the very next box that pops up
(refers to replace address book), click OK.  Then the next box
that pops up (refers to copy of Address Book), click OK.  And,
Voila!  You've replaced your address book successfully!
You can breathe easier!  It worked!  They're in there!

Replacing the Favorites:

1.   Leave the floppy disk in the drive, because you saved both
the Address book and the favorites on it.  Click on the  Favorites
in the toolbar, and then click on "Favorite Places".  That opens
up the Favorite Places box.

2.  Look to the bottom right corner, and click on Save/replace.
Click on the circle next to "Replace the Favorite Places for your
current screen name", then OK.

3.  This brings up the "Select File to Restore" box, in the "Look In"
bar, click in bar and click on 3 1/2 floppy (A:), then click on
Favorites.pfc in the large white box, and that will plant the file
name, and click "Open".  In the very next box that pops up
(refers to replace Favorite Places), click OK.  Then the next box
that pops up (refers to copy of Favorite Places), click OK.
And you're done!!

Now you're an expert on Saving and Replacing your Address
Book and your Favorite Places in AOL!   Hope this has been
helpful to all of you that are using AOL.  I know the rest of
you are wondering when it's your turn again, and it's from now
on.  I will be dealing with more general bits of computer and
Internet info again.  I have had many people emailing me for
help, and I have many subjects to share with you.  If any of you
have any questions, please email me, and I will do my best to
answer you.

I've been building and fixing a lot of computers lately, and I
have a few helpful hints:

1.  Don't let your computer get wet or rained on, the motherboard
will mold :), and it won't work anymore either.  It may also kill
your cpu, ram, hard drive...  electricity and water just don't mix.
It will also cost you money!!

2.  If you want to know something new about your computer, one
of the best things to do is to buy a book on that subject.  There are
a lot of great places to find new and old books: Amazon.com is one
of the best places for new and used computer books (any kind of
books).  You don't have to read the book from one end to the other, use it as a reference book.  Read a couple chapters, and you'll learn the lingo.  I'd be happy to recommend good books on any computer subject.  Don't be afraid or embarrassed to buy the "Dummies books".  They are very entertaining!  I have bought several!

3.   Keep your Anti-virus program updated so you don't get a virus!
(refer to previous newsletter):

4.  Have some fun with that computer!  Don't be afraid of it.  You are not going to cause great damage to your computer while you are learning to use it.

5.  Do shut down your computer properly (Start, shutdown, and  shutdown, Ok), and don't turn off your surge protector.
It can't protect your computer from power surges if it's not on.
One more thing about surge protectors, if you live in the country, and you have a lot of electrical power failures, remember that you will probably experience a power surge when it comes back on, so your best bet is to unplug your computer during this time. It just doesn't seem to protect well enough.  I've had two recent repairs for just this reason.  One other thing you might look into is a surge protector for your house.  I don't know what kind of money we're talking about, but it might be worth it if you are experiencing other problems with other electrical devices in your home during this situation.  Something to think about.

I'll let you go, now.   Have a wonderful new Spring Day!
